FAQs + Important Information

What are SimpleSymbols™

SimpleSymbols™ Communication tiles are a 3D-printed core vocabulary symbol system, color-coded using the Modified Fitzgerald Key to support language organization and visual access. Each symbol represents a high-frequency core vocabulary word, with fringe vocabulary sets coming soon.

Getting Started with SimpleSymbols™

Setting up is simple. Select the vocabulary words most relevant to your learner and arrange them on any flat surface, communication board, or activity-specific layout. Because every tile is the same size, symbols can be organized into rows, grids, or grouped by color category — whatever works best for your learner.

There's no complicated setup, no prep time, and no special equipment required. SimpleSymbols™ are designed to fit naturally into your learner's day, whether that's a therapy session, a classroom activity, or routine at home.

Why SimpleSymbols™?

If you've ever spent an afternoon printing, cutting, and laminating symbols only to find them bent, crumpled, soggy, or missing by the next session — you're not alone. SimpleSymbols™ communication tiles were created by someone who understands that prep time is valuable time, and that communication tools should be durable enough to keep up with real daily use. SimpleSymbols™ Communication Tiles were designed to reduce prep time for SLPs, educators, and caregivers. Just grab the symbols you need and build a board in seconds. Customize vocabulary sets for any activity, routine, or environment, and reuse them session after session.

Who are SimpleSymbols™ for?

SimpleSymbols™ are designed for learners of all ages and abilities — from young children just beginning to communicate, to school-age learners building and expanding language skills, to adults who benefit from visual communication support.

  • Early learners — introduce core vocabulary early to build a strong communication foundation before literacy develops
  • School-age children — support language development, sentence building, and participation across classroom activities and routines
  • Adolescents & adults — provide dignified, age-neutral communication support without childlike imagery or toy-like materials (more symbols coming soon)
  • Individuals with autism — support AAC use, aided language input, and functional communication across environments
  • Individuals with speech & language disorders — including apraxia, dysarthria, aphasia, and other conditions affecting expressive communication
  • AAC users — as a low-tech complement or backup to high-tech devices
  • Anyone who benefits from visual support — including English language learners, individuals with cognitive or intellectual disabilities, and those recovering from stroke or brain injury

Whether used by an SLP in a therapy room, a teacher in a classroom, a caregiver at home, or an adult in a community setting — SimpleSymbols™ are designed to meet learners wherever they are, at every stage of life.

Where to Start

Begin with a small set of high-frequency words your learner already encounters every day — go, stop, want, more, help, and not is a great foundation as these words can be used for a variety of communicative purposes. From there, mix and match tiles as activities, environments, and communication goals evolve.

Ideas for Use

  • Therapy sessions: Build a quick activity board at the start of a session using only the vocabulary you need. Innovative board design allows for easy removal of tiles to quickly switch out vocabulary, to incorporate sentence building and expansion as well as hands-on learning in real time.
  • Classroom routines: Set up a consistent daily communication board using high-frequency core words. Add fringe vocabulary tiles as activities change throughout the day.
  • Home practice: Place tiles in context — near the dinner table, during play, or at bedtime — to encourage spontaneous communication with early communicators in natural environments.
  • Choice making: Lay out 2–4 tiles to support simple decisions during meals, play, or daily routines.
  • Modeling (aided language input): Point to or hand tiles to your learner as you speak to model language naturally during any activity.
  • On the go: Lightweight and easy to pack for community outings, home visits, or travel.

Materials + Care

SimpleSymbols are 3D printed using high-quality PLA — a durable, eco-friendly material built to last through daily use. Every tile is a uniform 2" × 2" for consistent handling and board building.

PLA based materials are easy to wipe clean using mild soap and warm water. Let dry completely and do not soak.
